NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Leanna Jadus (Long Beach, Calif.) of the volleyball team and junior Kayjuan Bynum (Springfield, Mass.) of the football team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Jadus posted two double-doubles in three matches last week, and came one kill shy of a perfect three-for-three showing. She had a team-high 17 kills along with 13 digs in a four-set win over rival New Haven to start the week. Jadus then followed that up with an 11 kill, 11 dig performance against Merrimack and a nine kill, 12 dig effort against Bridgeport.
Bynum paced the defense with team-highs of seven tackles, 3.5 sacks and three forced fumbles, the latter of two which were both career-highs, in the Owls’ 28-17 win over Stonehill. He became the first Owl in seven years to notch at least three sacks in a game, with the last being Andrew Pratt against AIC in 2008. In addition, no Owl had forced multiple fumbles in a game since Daniel Allen accomplished the feat against Pace in 2010.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University's 'Athlete of the Week' recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the 'Athlete of the Week' program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
