NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Nicole Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) of the women's basketball team and senior Desmond Williams (Torrington, Conn.) of the men's basketball team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Grossbard averaged 13.5 points, 6.5 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game in the Owls' two victories to kick off the 2015-16 campaign. She registered a career-high 20 points and a team-high seven assists in Southern's win over Bridgeport on Sunday. Grossbard had seven points and six assists in the season opener against USciences.
Williams averaged 23.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game as the Owls' knocked off Dominican and Bridgeport in their season opening weekend. He had a double-double in the win over Dominican with a career-high 28 points and 11 boards, plus five assists. He also scored 18 points in 23 minutes in the win over Bridgeport.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University's 'Athlete of the Week' recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the 'Athlete of the Week' program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
