NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) of the women’s basketball team and senior Dieter Gutbrod (Sandy Hook, Conn.) of the men’s cross country team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Beathea averaged 18.5 points, 18.0 rebounds, 2.5 steals and a block to lead the Owls to a 1-1 week. In the loss to Adelphi, she recorded her first double-double of the season with 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Owls. On Saturday, Beathea had a career day as she registered a team-high 21 points and a career-high 22 rebounds, which set a new Southern Connecticut single-game record.
Gutbrod concluded his 2015 season with a 58th place finish (out of 246) at the NCAA Division II Championships in Joplin, Mo. this past weekend. He set a new personal best time with a mark of 30:50.4.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
