NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Shatajah Wattely (Uncasville, Conn.) of the women’s indoor track and field team and senior Raymond Cswerko (Torrington, Conn.) of the men’s swimming and diving team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Competing at the Yale Season Opener over the weekend, Wattely tied the SCSU program record in the 60 meters, as she crossed the line in 7.60 seconds for a first place finish. Wattely also ran a leg of the 4x400 relay that finished first in 3:50.14. By virtue of her efforts, she was selected as the Northeast-10 Women’s Track Athlete of the Week.
Cswerko played an integral role in the Owls’ fourth place team finish at the ECAC Winter Championships. He finished first in the 100 yard breaststroke, second in the 200 individual medley, third in the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke and 400 freestyle relay and seventh as a part of the 800 freestyle relay. For his efforts, he was also named the Northeast-10 Men’s Swimmer of the Week.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
