NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Danielle Powell (Middletown, N.Y.) of the women’s basketball team and redshirt senior Michael Lee (New London, Conn.) of the men’s indoor track and field team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Powell helped the Owls notch victories over Concordia and Pace last week to improve to 7-3 overall. She averaged 14.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.0 block per game while shooting 52-percent from the field and a perfect 100-percent from the free throw line.
Lee etched his name in the SCSU record books with a stellar showing at the Elm City Challenge last week. During day one of the meet, Lee set new SCSU and meet records with a long jump mark of 7.55 meters. On day two of the meet, Lee posted new meet and SCSU records with a triple jump mark of 15.40 meters. Both of those jumps by Lee were NCAA provisional qualifying marks.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
