NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Danielle Powell (Middletown, N.Y.) of the women’s basketball team and junior Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) of the men’s basketball team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Powell averaged 14.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game last week as the Owls closed out the first semester with an 8-4 mark. She notched a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds in a win over Caldwell and followed that up with a team-high 14 points in Sunday’s game against St. Thomas Aquinas.
Mallory averaged 19.5 points, 5.5 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game in Southern’s two contests last week. He scored 19 points and handed out six assists in a win over Caldwell and added 20 points and five rebounds against the University of the Sciences. The Owls closed the fall semester with a 9-3 mark and a No. 20 national ranking.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
