NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Shatajah Wattely (Uncasville, Conn.) of the women’s indoor track and field team and senior Desmond Williams (Torrington, Conn.) of the men’s basketball team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Wattely registered the best time in Division II in the 200 meters this past weekend at the Boston University Valentine’s Invitational. She placed fourth overall with a time of 23.83 seconds and broke her own school record in that event. She was also named the Northeast-10 Track Athlete of the Week for her performance.
Williams averaged 27.5 points and 10.5 rebounds on 44-percent shooting, 40-percent from beyond the arc and 90-percent from the free throw line in Southern’s two games last week. He scored the Owls' final 13 points to seal an 89-77 win at AIC. He finished that game with 25 points and 12 rebounds, then nearly missed his 14th double-double of the year in a loss at Saint Rose when he scored 30 and pulled down nine boards. Williams has scored 30 or more points in five of his last 11 games. He was named to the Northeast-10 weekly honor roll for his efforts.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
