NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Shatajah Wattely (Uncasville, Conn.) of the women’s indoor track and field team and senior Michael Lee (New London, Conn.) of the men’s indoor track team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Wattely captured New England titles in both the 200 meters and the 4x400 relay, and also earned All-New England laurels in the 60 meters as the Owls finished sixth at the New England Championships. Her time of 23.96 in the 200 meters was actually the third-best time in Division II this year – she already holds the top spot in the nation with a time of 23.83 from earlier in the season. She also ran a leg of the 4x400 relay that posted a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 3:42.45.
Lee won the New England title in the triple jump and also collected All-New England accolades in the long jump as Southern finished fourth at the New England Championships. His mark of 15.39 meters was a NCAA provisional figure. However, he already has the top mark in Division II in that event, a NCAA automatic qualifying figure, from earlier in the year. Lee also finished sixth in the long jump with a clearance of 7.03 meters.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
