NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Alexandra Avendano (Burlington, Mass.) of the gymnastics team and senior Jake Lieberman (Commack, N.Y.) of the baseball team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Avendano helped the Owls set a new team program record on the beam, along with a new season-high score in Sunday’s meet against Rutgers, Towson and West Chester. She registered an eighth place finish on the vault (team-high) with a 9.625. Avendano also finished 10th overall on the beam with a 9.675 and was 12th on the floor with a 9.7. Southern’s old standing record of 48.000 on the beam was set back in 1998 at the USAG Collegiate National Championships, while the group on Sunday compiled a 48.375.
Lieberman registered a triple, a run batted in and scored twice in Southern’s only game of the week against Adelphi on Sunday.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
