NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Destiney Coward (East Haven, Conn.) of the women’s outdoor track and field team and junior Greg Zullo (Branford, Conn.) of the baseball team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Coward started off the outdoor season on the right foot this past weekend, as she claimed first place in the hammer throw at the Yale Invitational with a toss of 56.69 meters. The throw was a NCAA provisional qualifying mark, as well as a career-best in that event.
Zullo helped the Owls record a perfect 2-0 week with victories over Post and New Haven. He paced the club with a .500 batting average and a .667 on-base percentage. Zullo also drove in a run and scored a run in addition to drawing three walks.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
