NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Laura Brustolon (Mystic, Conn.) of the women’s outdoor track and field team and freshman Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.) of the baseball team have been named as the Comcast/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Month for April.
Brustolon enjoyed an outstanding month, which was highlighted by her performance in the 5,000 meters at the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton. She shattered a 20-year old school record in that event – by more than 10 seconds – with a time of 17:27.27, a mark that was also a NCAA Division II provisional qualifying figure. She also finished 21st in the 3,000 meters at the Penn Relays.
Geffert batted .434 with 37 runs batted in during the month of April for the Owls, who posted a 14-9 mark in that span. He collected 36 hits in 22 games, including four home runs and 10 doubles. Geffert also scored 22 runs in April for the Owls.
For his efforts, he was named Northeast-10 Conference Player and Freshman of the Week on April 13. Geffert was also chosen as the NE-10 Freshman of the Week on April 27.
For the second consecutive year, Comcast is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Month’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Month’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each month for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
