NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Destiney Coward (East Haven, Conn.) of the women’s outdoor track and field team and senior Michael Lee (New London, Conn.) of the men’s outdoor track and field team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Coward had a strong showing at the UConn Northeast Challenge over the weekend. She won the hammer throw with a personal best mark of 57.16 meters. That figure was also a NCAA provisional qualifying effort and currently ranks No. 8 in Division II in that event this spring. Coward also placed ninth in the shot put with a throw of 12.04 meters.
Lee posted two NCAA provisional qualifying marks at the UConn Northeast Challenge this weekend. He won the triple jump with a leap of 15.33 meters, which is currently No. 8 in Division II. Lee also placed second in the long jump with a clearance of 7.37 meters, which ranks No. 17 in Division II this spring.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
