NEW HAVEN, Conn. – For the second consecutive week, junior Shatajah Wattely (Uncasville, Conn.) of the women's outdoor track and field team and senior Tresley Dupont (Tiverton, R.I.) of the men's outdoor track and field team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Both Wattely and Dupont helped their teams record third place finishes at the all-division New England Outdoor Championships over the weekend, behind only Division I programs Northeastern and Rhode Island.
Wattely had a remarkable performance over the weekend as she claimed four New England titles – two individual and two relays. Along the way, she also registered four NCAA provisional qualifying marks. Her time of 11.49 in the 100 meters was a new school record, eclipsing her own mark by .11 seconds. She narrowly missed another school record in claiming another New England championship in the 200 meters with a time of 23.59 seconds. Wattely also ran legs of the 4x100 relay (46.20 seconds) and 4x400 relay (3:43.39) that also crossed the line first for top honors in New England.
Dupont started the weekend by capturing the New England title in the hammer throw. His toss of 63.49 meters was both a personal best and a NCAA provisional qualifying mark. On Saturday, he placed third in the shot put to earn All-New England honors. Dupont’s throw of 16.61 meters was also a NCAA provisional qualifying figure.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University's 'Athlete of the Week' recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the 'Athlete of the Week' program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
