NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Shatajah Wattely (Uncasville, Conn.) of the women’s outdoor track and field team and senior Michael Lee (New London, Conn.) of the men’s outdoor track and field team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Wattely made it three consecutive CTANG/SCSU Female Athlete of the Week honors after capturing All-America laurels in four separate events at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She was fourth in the 100 meters (11.78 seconds) and fifth in the 200 meters (23.89 seconds) while also running legs of the 4x100 relay that was seventh (52.09 seconds) and the 4x400 relay (3:43.77) that captured ninth place. Wattely has now collected 14 All-America honors in her first three years as an Owl.
Lee closed his collegiate career in style at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships with his fourth career All-America honor. He placed seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 51.66 meters, a season-best outdoor figure.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
