NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Brianna Craft (Hamden, Conn.) of the field hockey team and junior Kendall Thomas (St. Albans, N.Y.) of the football team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Craft backstopped the Owls to a 2-0 week and registered her first collegiate shutout in the process. She made nine saves in a 2-1 victory over Franklin Pierce and followed that up with five saves in a 3-0 shutout of Molloy.
Thomas set a new Northeast-10 Conference record with 246 kickoff return yards in the Owls' 31-27 win over Stonehill. He returned one of those kicks 98 yards for a touchdown, the first time since 2002 that a Southern Connecticut player returned a kickoff for a score. Thomas totaled three returns in excess of 40 yards, and his last return, a 44-yarder, allowed SCSU to start the eventual game-winning drive in Stonehill territory.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University's 'Athlete of the Week' recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the 'Athlete of the Week' program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
