NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Destiney Coward (East Haven, Conn.) of the women’s indoor track and field team and senior Michael Mallory (Waterbury, Conn.) of the men’s basketball team have been named as the Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Coward broke her own school record in the weight throw and captured first place with a mark of 19.62 meters at the Dartmouth Relays on Sunday. The meet featured competitors from Division I programs, including Dartmouth, UMass and UMass-Lowell.
Mallory averaged 32 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in a 2-0 week for the Owls, one that included a pair of come-from-behind victories. He opened the week with a season-high 40 points in a win at St. Michael’s, and then scored 21 of his 24 points in the second half of Saturday’s win at Stonehill. The Owls trailed by as many as 17 points in the second half against the Skyhawks. He was also named the NE-10 Spalding Player of the Week for his efforts.
