NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Destiney Coward (East Haven, Conn.) of the women’s indoor track and field team and junior Tyler Vander Vos (South Windsor, Conn.) of the men’s swimming and diving team have been named as the Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Coward captures SCSU Athlete of the Week honors for the second week in a row. On Friday at the Spartan Regional Invite, she broke her own school record in the weight throw for the second time in less than a week, this time with a NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 19.76 meters. That toss was good for first place, as was her figure of 13.87 meters in the shot put, also a NCAA provisional qualifying mark.
Vander Vos posted a total of six first place finishes – five individual – as the Owls swept Saint Rose and Le Moyne last weekend. He placed first in the 50, 100 and 200 meter freestyle against Le Moyne and in the 100 and 200 against Saint Rose. Vander Vos also swam a leg of the 200 medley relay that captured first place against LeMoyne.
