NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Juniors Alexandra Avendano (Burlington, Mass.) of the gymnastics team and Hunter Stokes (Madison, Conn.) of the men’s indoor track and field team have been named as the Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Avendano played a major factor in the Owls' setting two new school records in Saturday's meet against Bridgeport. The Owls recorded a new team scoring record (192.000) along with a new team mark on the beam (48.5). Avendano placed third on the floor exercise with a 9.825, and was sixth on the vault with a 9.7. She also scored a 9.6 on the beam to place eighth in that event.
Stokes helped the Owls place third overall out of 15 programs and tops among Division II competitors at the Metropolitan Conference Championship on Friday. Only Division I programs Rutgers and Manhattan registered more points on the afternoon than the Owls' 99 points. Stokes placed third in the heptathlon with 4,268 points, which was almost 250 points higher than his previous career-best.
