Southern Connecticut State University Athletics

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Juniors Destiney Coward (East Haven, Conn.) of the women’s indoor track and field team and Tyler Vander Vos (South Windsor, Conn.) of the men’s swimming and diving team have been named as the Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.

Coward was named the Co-Most Outstanding Field Performer of the 2017 NE10 Indoor Track and Field Championships and helped the Owls to a runner-up finish. She continued her dominance at the league’s pinnacle event with conference titles via a pair of NCAA provisional qualifying marks of 17.38 meters in the weight throw and 13.41 meters in the shot put.

Vander Vos posted a total of five first place finishes – three individual – as the Owls finished as the runner-up at the 2017 NE10 Swimming and Diving Championships. He claimed the top spot in the 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle (NCAA B-Cut mark) and also swam legs of the winning 200 freestyle relay and 800 freestyle relays. He also swam a leg of the 400 freestyle relay that placed third.
