NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Shatajah Wattely (Uncasville, Conn.) of the women’s indoor track and field team and junior Luke Velez (Killingworth, Conn.) of the men’s indoor track and field team have been named as the Chick-Fil-A of North Haven/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Wattely claimed two New England titles at this weekend’s Championship event at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. Her time of 54.18 in the 400 meters was a new school record, a NCAA automatic qualifying time, and also the third-best in Division II this season. She also ran a leg of the champion 4x400 relay that posted the fourth-fastest time in Division II in 3:43.65.
Velez collected All-New England honors in three events at this weekend’s championship. He ran a leg of the distance medley relay that finished as the runner-up in 9:56.15 (NCAA provisional qualifying time) and the 4x400 relay that was sixth in 3:20.80. Velez also finished third in the 200 meters in 22.11.
Chick-Fil-A of North Haven, located at 560 Universal Drive, is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
