NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Ashley Betts (Weymouth, Mass.) of the women’s cross country team and senior Noah Varonier (Miller Place, N.Y.) of the men’s soccer team have been named as the Chick-fil-A of North Haven/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Betts placed third overall among non-Division I competitors and 27th overall out of a field of 124 at Saturday’s Ted Owen Invitational at Central Connecticut. The Owls placed third as a team at the competition.
Varonier earned this honor for the second week in a row after registering two shutouts in another 1-0-1 week. He opened the week with two saves in a win over Stonehill and followed that up with a career-best seven stops in a clean sheet against No. 24 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce.
Chick-fil-A of North Haven, located at 560 Universal Drive, is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
