NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Jacqueline Johannes (Southbury, Conn.) of the women’s basketball team and senior Ryan Whitehead (Darien, Conn.) of the men’s track and field team have been named as the Comcast/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Month for December.
Johannes has staked a claim as one of the top forwards in the Northeast-10 Conference this season. During the month of December, she averaged 14.3 points and 10.8 rebounds per contest. Johannes currently leads the league in rebounding at 11.8 boards per contest. She was named as the NE-10 Women’s Basketball Athlete of the Week on Dec. 7 and was tabbed for the league’s weekly honor roll the following week.
Whitehead excelled in the pole vault during the Owls’ two competitions in December. He leaped 5.05 meters at the meet against the Owls’ alumni and New Haven, which was good for NCAA automatic qualification status. He also posted a NCAA provisional qualifying mark the previous week at Yale. Whitehead was named to the Northeast-10 Conference weekly honor roll twice during the month.
For the second consecutive year, Comcast is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Month’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Month’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each month for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
