NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Samantha Cozzolino (Hamden, Conn.) of the women’s lacrosse team and sophomore Leonardo LaPorte (Washingtonville, N.Y.) of the men’s swimming and diving team have been named as the Chick-fil-A of North Haven/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Cozzolino led the Owls with 15 points (13 goals, two assists), tallied 15 groundballs and had a pair of game-winning goals in a 2-1 week for the Owls. She opened with four goals - including the game-winner with 14 seconds left - and six groundballs in a 14-13 win over St. Michael's. The next day, she set a new career-high with six goals - including the game-winner with 5:50 left - and matched a career-high with seven points in a 17-16 win over UC-Colorado Springs. She capped the week with a team-high four points (three goals, one assist) in a loss to St. Anselm.
LaPorte capped a fantastic sophomore season with a fifth-place finish in the 200 butterfly at the NCAA Championships and First-Team All-America honors. He completed the race in a time of 1:47.21. LaPorte also qualified in the 100 fly and was 21st in 48.68.
Chick-fil-A of North Haven, located at 560 Universal Drive, is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University's 'Athlete of the Week' recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the 'Athlete of the Week' program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
