NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Megan Caporossi (Northford, Conn.) of the softball team and senior Richard Jackson (New Rochelle, N.Y.) of the men’s track and field team have been named as the Comcast/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Month for May.
Caporossi helped power the Owls to a 9-2 month that included the program’s first-ever Northeast-10 Conference Tournament title and a berth in the NCAA East Regional final. She batted a team-high .400 (18-for-45) in May with two home runs and a team-high 17 runs batted in. Caporossi was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2010 NE-10 Tournament after batting .500 (7-for-14) with one home run, seven RBI, a .500 on-base percentage and a .929 slugging percentage in the tournament. Caporossi also scored 18 runs in the month and accumulated a .689 slugging percentage.
Jackson capped his collegiate career by earning All-America honors in the 4x400 relay at the NCAA Championships. He also qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 400 meters and finished 14th in that event. Jackson also shined at the New England Championships, where he was the runner-up in the 400 meters and was part of the 4x400 relay team that also finished second. He also was a part of the school’s record setting 4x400 relay performance at the IC4A Championships. Jackson began the month with a third-place individual finish in the 400 meters at the Northeast-10 Conference Championships and was a member of the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams that finished second at that event.
For the second consecutive year, Comcast is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Month’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Month’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each month for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
