NEW HAVEN, Conn. – #Kristen Frost# (Madison, Conn.) of the women’s swimming and diving team and #Kevin Taylor# (Bristol, Conn.) of the men’s indoor track and field team have been named as Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Month for January.
Frost continued her assault on both the Southern Connecticut and NCAA record book during the month of January. In a meet against Marist on Jan. 19, Frost set a new NCAA Division II record in the 1,000 yard freestyle. She finished with a time of 9:53.75, which bettered the old mark of 9:55.47, set by Diana Betsworth of Truman State University on March 16, 2002.
Frost won three individual events in the meet against Marist and was named Northeast-10 and ECAC Swimmer of the Week for her performance in that competition.
She also won three events in meets against West Chester and Connecticut College. Frost was also named to the Northeast-10 weekly honor roll on Jan. 28 for her performance against West Chester.
The sophomore also captured the College Division title at the Ocean Mile Swim in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and was a part of the winning SCSU relay team in that event.
Taylor, a senior All-America candidate, won the long jump at the University of Rhode Island Sorlein Invitational with a leap of 7.12 meters. Thanks in part to Taylor’s efforts, the Owls finished third overall at that competition and were the highest-finishing Division II team behind only URI and UConn.
In addition, he also finished second out of 37 competitors in the long jump at the Yale Invitational on Jan. 12 and earned Northeast-10 Field Athlete of the Week honors for that performance.
Taylor was also named to the league’s weekly honor roll on Jan. 21.
