NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Lauren Zarrella (Morris, Conn.) of the field hockey team and senior Victor Hernandez (Rye Brook, N.Y.) of the men’s soccer team have been named as the Comcast/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Month for October.
Zarrella posted a 6-3 mark between the pipes for the Owls during the month of October to key the team’s surge towards a Northeast-10 Conference Tournament berth. She also posted two shutouts in October. Zarrella posted a career-best 20 saves on Oct. 16 in a contest against No. 3 nationally ranked UMass-Lowell.
Hernandez played a key role in the Owls’ October surge into the national rankings. He registered eight points (two goals, four assists) as SCSU posted a 5-1-2 team mark. Thanks in part to Hernandez’s efforts, the Owls finished the regular season as the No. 2 seed in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament.
For the third consecutive year, Comcast is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Month’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Month’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each month for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
