NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Courtni Walker (Uniondale, N.Y.) of the women’s indoor track and field team and junior Matthew Sorena (Brookfield, Conn.) of the men’s swimming and diving team have been named as the Comcast/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Month for December.
Walker displayed her versatility in both track and field events for the Owls in the month of December. She won the long jump at the Lidifter Invitational with a leap of 17 feet, 6.75 inches. The following week, Walker claimed the 60 meter dash at the Harvard Season Opener with a NCAA provisional qualifying mark. For her efforts, she was named the Northeast-10 Conference Athlete of the Week. During the course of her two separate victories, Walker defeated Division I opponents from Yale, Northeastern, Holy Cross, St. Peter’s, Sacred Heart and Marist.
Sorena powered the Owls to a second-place team finish at the Northeast-10 Invitational on the heels of three first place marks. He won the 1,650 freestyle with a NCAA ‘B’ cut and new pool record mark of 16:23.9. Sorena also claimed the 400 individual medley in 4:15.25 and the 200 freestyle in 1:45.85.
