Meghan Brown enters her fifth season as the Southern Connecticut State University women’s basketball head coach in 2011-12. She was named as the head coach in August of 2007.
The North Haven native and former St. John’s University standout took over the reigning 2006-07 Division II National Champions compiling a first year record of 15-14 in her first season.
Over the course of the past four years, Brown has guided the Owls to two appearances in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. Southern Connecticut has also ranked as high as No. 2 in the national polls during her time on the sidelines. On the individual front, she has coached one All-American, one All-Region pick, two All-Conference honorees and one Conference All-Rookie Team selection.
Brown's teams have also excelled in the community and in the classroom over the past four years. She has had three selections to the Northeast-10 Conference Women's Basketball All-Academic Team and numerous honorees for the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll.
The Owls have also thrived within the realm of community service, and were recognized by the Connecticut Department on Higher Education for their efforts during the 2010 calendar year.
During stints as an assistant coach at Yale University, the University of Miami, the University of Kentucky and Eastern Kentucky University, Brown was a part of three post-season appearances, including two NCAA Tournament berths.
On the individual front, she coached one All-American, nine All-Conference selections, two All-Rookie Team picks and one League Rookie of the Year. In addition, three players took home Honorable Mention All-League accolades.
Brown returned to her native Connecticut in 2005 and joined the staff at Yale as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. Over the course of the past two seasons, she played an integral role in an immediate turnaround for the Bulldogs.
Yale improved its win total by nine victories in 2006-07, one of the largest jumps in Division I. In addition, three players took home All-Ivy accolades following the campaign, including Rookie of the Year Melissa Colborne.
Prior to joining the staff at Yale, Brown returned to her native Connecticut in 2005 after two years as assistant women’s basketball coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Miami. While with the Hurricanes, she guided the program through the transition from the Big East Conference to the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Miami qualified for the 2004 NCAA tournament and climbed as high as No. 17 in the national polls during the season. The Hurricanes also enjoyed their best start in school history at 12-0 in 2003-04.
A total of five players earned All-Conference or Honorable Mention honors during Brown’s two years at Miami. She also coached Hurricanes All-American Tamara James.
Brown spent the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons as assistant women’s basketball coach and recruiting coordinator at Eastern Kentucky University. She helped the Colonels claim the 2002 Ohio Valley Conference championship and qualify for the WNIT.
Seven players took home league honors during Brown’s time at EKU, including four All-Conference picks, two All-Rookie team selections and one Honorable Mention nominee.
Brown attained her first Division I position in 1998 and spent three years as an assistant coach at the University of Kentucky. The Wildcats qualified for the 1999 NCAA Tournament after posting a 21-11 mark.
Brown made her first foray into coaching as a volunteer assistant at SCSU. She then entered the collegiate coaching ranks in a full-time capacity in 1997 as an assistant at Lynn University (Fla.).
That appointment came on the heels of a stellar four-year playing career at St. John’s University, where she served as team captain of the Red Storm as a senior.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in sports administration from St. John’s in 1996. Brown later completed a master’s degree in sports management at Eastern Kentucky in 2003.
Originally from North Haven, Conn., Brown (then Meghan Burke) played scholastically at Sacred Heart Academy in Hamden, Conn. As a senior, she led the Pacers to the Class L Championship and was named the New Haven Register Area Girls’ Basketball Most Valuable Player.
Brown currently resides in Hamden, Conn. with her husband, Dontrese, their daughter, Jocelyn and their son, Quincy.
