Women’s Basketball Downs Post In Season Opener

Allen Drops career-high 33 points in first victory

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Lexi Allen (Southbury, Conn.) scored a career-high 33 points and dished out seven assists, as the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated Post University in their 2008-09 season opener, 105-61, on Saturday afternoon at Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls improved to 1-0 on the season, while the Eagles dropped to 0-1.

The two clubs traded baskets early on before SCSU used an 11-2 run featuring buckets from three different Owls to take a 20-10 lead with 15:00 to play in the first half. SCSU would continue to extend the lead before the half ended and took a 48-27 lead into the intermission.

Allen led the Owls with 14 points in the first half, followed by 2007-08 All Rookie Team selection, Logan Lentz (Chambersburg, Pa.) with 10 points, and Jacqueline Johannes (Southbury, Conn.) added six.

In the second half of action, the Owls threw a full-court press at the Eagles that forced 11 second half turnovers. SCSU collected 28 points off turnovers in the game and tallied eight fast break points. In addition, the Owls connected on 19-23 free throws (82.6%), a promising statistic for the start of the 2008-09 season.

The Owls reached 100 points for the second time since November, 18 1995. Lentz and Johannes each recorded 14 points, freshman Alex Fiola (Fall River, Mass.) added 13 in her debut and Allyson Smith (East Hampton, Conn.) finished with eight points for the Owls.

Stephanie Goss and Mallorie Michalak each tallied 11 points for the Eagles, however SCSU prevailed in their home opener 105-61.

The women's basketball team will travel to Colchester, Vt. for their first conference match of the season against St. Michael's College. The time of the game is set for 5:30 p.m.
