ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team began a three-day road trip on Sunday afternoon, when they traveled to Orangeburg, N.Y. for a non-conference game against Dominican College. Despite a team-high 22 points from senior Lexi Allen (Southbury, Conn.), the Owls were defeated by the Chargers in a heartbreaker, 67-64, at the Hennessy Center. With the loss, Southern snapped a three-game non-conference unbeaten streak, falling to 4-6 on the season. The Chargers surpassed the .500 mark for the season, improving to 5-4.
In a very fast pace first half, the Chargers jumped out to a 13-7 lead over the first seven minutes of action. However, sparked by a basket and a pair of free-throws by Allen, the Owls cut the Charger lead in half with eight minutes remaining in the first half. Dominican closed out the half with a 13-9 run behind the hot hand of Adele Laskowski, taking a 37-28 lead into halftime.
Facing a nine point deficit to begin the second half, the Owls relied on the three-point shooting of Allen and
Logan Lentz (Chambersburg, Pa.) to get back into the game. Just five minutes into the period, the Owls had cut the Charger lead down to one, forcing Coach Burke to use a timeout.
The two teams battled back and forth for the next nine minutes of action, when the Owls captured their first lead of the game on a lay-up by Lentz. After exchanging buckets for three possessions, the Chargers strung together three field goals in a row taking a 64-60 lead with 3:08 left in the game.
The Owls were not done yet, as
Allyson Smith (East Hampton, Conn.) knocked down a free-throw and Lentz drilled a three-pointer with 1:28 left, nodding the game up at 64. Despite a great effort down the stretch, three free-throws proved to be the difference, as the Chargers held on for the 67-64 victory.
Laskowski led the way for the Chargers, scoring a game-high 27 points (19 in the first half) on 12-21 shooting. Althea Chambers registered 12 points, five rebounds and three assists in the victory.
For the Owls, Allen recorded a team-high 22 points on 7-16 shooting, 5-9 from behind the arc, and dished out six assists. Lentz added 13 points and five assists, as
Jacqueline Johannes (Southbury, Conn.) registered a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the losing effort.
The Southern Connecticut State women's basketball team will travel to Philadelphia, Pa. to take on the Tigers of Holy Family University. Tip off is set for 6 p.m.
