Derrick Corbett (New Haven, Conn.) scored a game- and career-high 25 points and sophomore guard
Trevor Harris (Nanuet, N.Y.) and senior forward Devon Sullivan (Jamaica, N.Y.) each posted a double-double, but the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team fell in overtime to Pace University by a score of 81-73 at Moore Fieldhouse in New Haven on Wednesday night. With the loss, the Owls fell to 6-17 overall and 2-16 in Northeast-10 Conference play.
Sullivan's double-double came via a season-high 21 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Harris' consisted of 15 points and 11 assists. The sophomore also matched his career high of eight rebounds.
Corbett started off the scoring for the Owls, knocking down his first four three-point attempts to account for the first 12 Southern Connecticut points. The Owls' 12-4 lead with 14:27 remaining in the first half marked the largest lead of the opening stanza for either team. Pace chipped away at the lead, led by eight first half points from Carlos Howard, and the Owls entered the intermission with a one-point lead at 27-26. Corbett's 12 points led all scorers in the opening frame. Sullivan netted eight points and hauled in a half-high six rebounds. Harris tacked on seven points to round out the Owls' first half scoring. He also dished out four assists to lead all players.
Pace broke the game open in the second half with a 19-5 run, fueled by ten points from Ryan Williams, to take a 50-38 lead with 11:33 remaining. The Owls chipped away at the double-digit lead, cutting it all the way down to four points at 65-61 with 15 seconds remaining. Sullivan promptly knocked down a three-pointer with eight seconds left to bring the lead to one point. After two free throws from Gibraltar White extended the lead back to three, freshman guard
Andrew Zito (Windsor, Conn.) drilled a trifecta with 0.9 seconds remaining to knot the game at 67-67 and send it into overtime.
In the extra period, the Setters from Pace University overpowered the Owls, outscoring them by a 14-6 margin. When the final horn sounded, Pace claimed an 81-73 victory.
Corbett finished with eight three-point field goals on 13 attempts before fouling out in the second half. He also converted his only free throw to round out his 25 point night. Sophomore guard
Tocari Davis (Bloomfield, Conn.) scored four points, Zito and junior guard
Terron Jones (Bridgeport, Conn.) each added three, and senior forward Ktrice McNeill (Bronx, N.Y.) tacked on two points to round out the Owls' scoring.
Williams led the Pace offense with 18 points. Laurence McGhee (16 points), Gibraltar White (14) and Carlos Howard (14) joined him in double figures.
The Owls return to the court on Saturday, Feb. 16 as they travel to Smithfield, R.I. to challenge Bryant University in a Northeast-10 Conference clash. The action tips-off from the Chace Wellness Center at 3:30 p.m.
