NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Four different members of the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team registered double figures, as the Owls handed Dominican a 71-67 loss in Moore Field House on Saturday afternoon. Senior
Jacqueline Johannes (Southbury, Conn.) led all Owls with 16 points, while senior
Allyson Smith (East Hampton, Conn.) chimed in with 13 points and five assists.
With the win, the Owls improved to 7-2 on the season. Dominican suffered its third loss, dropping to 4-3 overall.
Johannes and
Logan Lentz (Chambersburg, Pa.) led the way for the Owls in the first half, combining for 19 of Southern's 35 points. Johannes dropped 10 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Lentz added nine points on 3-3 shooting from behind the arc. Southern went a reputable 12-30 (40%) from the floor, but only carried a seven point lead into halftime, 35-28.
After the break, the Owls came out of the locker room on fire and extended their lead to double-digits. However after a Johannes lay-up at the 3:07 mark, the Chargers went on a 9-0 run cutting their deficit to just one with 27 seconds left in regulation.
Despite the late run, free-throws by Ashley O'Dell (Lincoln, R.I.) and Smith sealed the deal for the Owls. With the win, Southern improved to 5-0 in Moore Field House this year.
Johannes finished with a team-high 16 points on 7-13 shooting and retrieved seven rebounds for the Owls. Smith tossed in 13 points along with six rebounds and five assists, while Lentz added 11 points and five boards. Although troubled by fouls for much of the second half,
LaTisha Hatcher (Detroit, Mich.) poured in 10 points and O'Dell dished out a game-high seven assists and hauled in seven rebounds.
The Owls return to action on Dec. 21 with an away game against Molloy. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Rockville Centre, N.Y.
