Box Score

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Jacqueline Johannes (Southbury, Conn.) and junior Shelley Pierson (Watervliet, N.Y.) combined for 30 points and 29 rebounds, as the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team knocked off Adelphi by the final score of 73-58 on Wednesday evening in Moore Field House.

With the victory, the Owls improved to 5-1, 3-1 in Northeast-10 competition, while the Panthers dropped to 0-5, 0-4 in the league.

The front court duo of Johannes and Pierson wasted very little time igniting the Owls' offense. Through the first 4:03 of play Southern captured a commanding 11-2 advantage and never looked back. Pierson collected 12 points and Johannes netted seven of her own en route to a 34-24 Owls' lead at halftime.

After the break in action, Kara Tancredi and the Panthers' offense generated a 12-7 run inching closer to the Owls. Regardless of Adelphi's surge, Southern battled back with a 12-2 run, capped off by a Logan Lentz (Chambersburg, Pa.) three-pointer. The basket granted the Owls an imposing 15 point margin lead, eventually leading to their fifth win of the season.

Pierson finished with a team-high 16 points going 8-11 from the field and hauled in 12 boards for the Owls. Johannes added 14 points and 17 rebounds, while senior Allyson Smith (East Hampton, Conn.) chipped in with nine points and three assists. Alex Fiola (Fall River, Mass.) and LaTisha Hatcher (Detroit, Mich.) each chimed in with eight points in the squad's third home win of the season.

Southern out-rebounded Adelphi 53-30, 27-9 on the offensive end and forced 30 Panther turnovers in the convincing triumph.

The Owls return to action on Dec. 5 with a home game against Saint Rose. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Moore Field House.
