PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Senior
Shelley Pierson (Watervliet, N.Y.) and
Sylvonya Moore (Stockton, Calif.) combined for 29 points and 24 rebounds, both having a double-double night, as the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team earned their first victory on the season on Friday night at Goldstein Fitness Center.
In the first half of the game, the Owls went on a 6-3 run in the first five minutes of action and never looked back. Pierson collected 11 points while Moore captured nine rebounds en route to a 46-32 Owl's lead at halftime.
After the break the Owls came out of the locker room with vengeance. Freshman Keshia Primio (Mississauga, Ontario) netted at 3 pointer at the start of the half, in which she finished the contest with seven points. Southern held control of the entire game despite the Knights having a 72.7% from the line.
Pierson finished the game with team-high 16 points, going 7-11 from the field and hauled in 10 boards for the Owls. Moore added 13 points and 14 rebounds, while senior
Logan Lentz (Chambersburg, Pa.) and freshman
Shaniqua Fuller (West Haven, Conn.) both contributed nine points each. Junior
Lauren Allen (Sterling Heights, Mich.), and freshman
Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y.) also factored in 7 points each in the victory.
Southern out rebounded Queens 58-32, 22-9 on the offensive end and forced 18 Knights turnovers.
The Owls return to action Nov. 13 as they are back at Goldstein Fitness Center at Pace to take on Bridgeport for a 5:30 p.m. start time.
