PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - Junior Sylvonya Moore (Stockton, Calif.) led all scorers with 18 points and freshman Moni Smith-Ocran tallied a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds to propel the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team to an 81-50 win over the University of Bridgeport on Saturday. The Owls improved to 2-0 on the year with the win.
For the second game in a row, the Owls held control of the game by not allowing their opponent to take the lead. Southern set the tone of the game after back to back turnovers from Bridgeport followed up with lay ups by Moore within the first two minutes of the game. The Owls went into halftime with a 16 point lead.
After the break, SCSU didn't let up while four Owls finished the game in double points. Each team turned the ball over 27 times, however Southern was able to capitalize, scoring 30 points off of the Purple Knights turnovers. Shelley Pierson (Watervliet, N.Y.) added 14 points for the Owls, who shot 52.5 percent for the game, while Alex Fiola (Fall River, Mass.) provided 11 points of her own.
The Owls will begin conference play as they host LeMoyne in their home opener at Moore Fieldhouse on Nov. 17 set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
