PLESANTVILLE, N.Y. - Two members of the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team reached double figures, but it wasn't enough as Pace defeated the Owls by a final score of 73, 59 at Goldstein Fitness Center Tuesday night. With the loss, the Owls drop to 3-1 overall, 1-1 in the Northeast-10 conference, while Pace improves to 5-0 overall, 2-0 in the league.
The first half of action started with back and forth ball. Southern sunk the first basket but Pace slowly took the lead from there. The Owls were able to come back to tie the game at 9-9 in the seventh minute, but the Settlers jumped to a quick 5-0 run within two minutes to put them ahead of the Owls by 10. Junior
Sylvonya Moore (Stockton, Calif.) had 14 points at the half but it wasn't enough as Pace took a 13 point lead into the half.
After the intermission Pace continued to attack as they went on a 7-2 run to be ahead as much as 18 points. The Owls battled back to being behind by only six points but the deficit was too much which led to a final score of 73-59.
Moore led all scorers with career high 24 points and also hauled in 14 rebounds, completing the only double-double of the game for either team. Senior
Shelley Pierson (Watervliet, N.Y.) also contributed to 10 points while freshman
Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y) had seven points with 12 rebounds. Senior
Logan Lentz (Chambersburg, Pa.) had seven points, also having a team high 6 assists in the game.
Pace forced 26 Owls turnovers which consisted in 30 of their points. The Settlers also shot 76 percent from the free throw.
The Owls return to action on Nov. 28 as they host the Yellow Jackets of American International at Moore Field House. Tip off is set for 1:30 p.m.
