GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Senior forward
Dexton Williamson (Bridgeport, Conn.) set a new career-high with 16 rebounds, while
Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.),
Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and
Chazz McCarter (New Haven, Conn.) all reached double figures to lead the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team to a 68-52 win at Adelphi on Wednesday evening. The Owls improved to 5-1, 3-1 in Northeast-10 Conference play with the win.
The Panthers dropped to 4-2, 2-2 with the loss.
A strong defensive effort keyed another fast start for the Owls. Southern Connecticut held Adelphi to just 12 percent shooting in the first half. Although both teams failed to find an offensive rhythm, the Owls used a 10-2 spurt midway through the half to take a 20-8 lead. Southern Connecticut held a 27-18 lead at halftime.
The second half was filled with runs from both teams, but the Owls were never truly tested. Adelphi closed the gap to six points early in the second frame, but SCSU used a 20-2 run to take a 24 point lead at 49-25.
Adelphi countered with a run of its own and got as close as 10, but the Owls were able to maintain their double digit lead the rest of the way.
Hamlet led the offense with 18 points, while Langston scored a career-high 17 points off the bench, including five three-pointers. McCarter chipped in 14 for the Owls.
Southern Connecticut is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Saint Rose for a 3:30 p.m. start.
