NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team fell short to Pace University on Tuesday night, 76-67 at the Pace NYC Campus.
Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) scored a team-high 20 points and
Ante Cosic (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) dropped a season-high 14 to lead the Owls' offensive attack.
Southern is now 2-21 overall and 1-16 in the Northeast-10. With the win, Pace is now 10-13 and 8-10 in the conference.
The Setters started off strong in the opening stanza. They took their largest lead of the half, up 15 at the 7:05 mark but the Owls pulled off a 8-1 run to cut the deficit to four at halftime. Cosic recorded six straight points for Southern followed by nine straight from Carberry as the Owls trailed 37-33 heading into the locker room.
Southern shot 46% (13-of-28) from the floor in the first twenty minutes of regulation and went 6-for-7 from the line. Pace was hot from downtown as they hit 50% of their shots behind-the-arc and were led by Justin Alston's 11 points. However, Carberry led all scorers at the break with 14.
The second half went back and forth throughout but the closet margin the remainder of the way was a four-point lead by the Setters. Alston's hot hand led the team to a 76-67 victory has he hit a game-high 24 points on 8-of-10 shooting.
Cosic scored a season-high 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting and was 2-for-4 from downtown.
Clyde Chapman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored double-digit points as well with 15 as he went 6-of-7 from the floor. Carberry matched a season-high six rebounds and
John Mazzarella (Wallingford, Conn.) also tied a season-high 10 rebounds.
Chris Harris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) dished out a game-high five assists to round out the top offensive performances for the Owls.
Southern returns to Moore Field House on Saturday, Feb. 13 for a Northeast-10 home contest against AIC. Game time is scheduled to start 3:30 p.m.
