Samantha Spindel Breaks School Record as Owls Capture Highest Finish in School History at Metropolitan Championships

MAHWAH, N.J. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's outdoor track and field team finished second overall at the 2010 Outdoor Metropolitan Championships on Saturday, which marked the highest finish in school history. The Owls finished second behind by St. John's University with 120 points. They captured 23 top-10 finishes and won five events – 100 meter hurdles, 400 meter hurdles, pole vault, discus throw and hammer throw. Samantha Spindel (Brewster, N.Y.) highlighted the day for Southern with a school record mark of 43.78 meters in the discus throw, breaking a record that stood for over 25 years.

In track events, Letecia Taylor (Plainfield, N.J.) took home two first place finishes in the 100 meter hurdles and 400 meter hurdles with times of 14.24 seconds and 1:02.82 respectively. Ashley Battle (Koselle Park, N.J.) finished fifth in the 100m hurdles (15.49) and ninth in the 400m hurdles (1:09.98).

In other track events, Jaclyn Sullivan (Lisbon, Conn.) placed fifth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:58.26, Sahnique Castella (Hartford, Conn.) finished sixth in the 100 meters with a time of 12.67 seconds and Sarah Hill (Rockville, Conn.) took ninth in the 200 meters with a mark of 26.25 seconds.

Ashley Bell (Riverhead, N.Y.) captured two top-10 finishes on the day. She placed fourth overall in the 200 meters in 25.78 seconds and eighth in the 100 meters with a time of 12.87 seconds.

In relay events, the 4x100 team took second overall with 48.35 seconds, the 4x400 finished third in 4:06.11 and the 4x800 placed sixth in 9:55.68

The Owls excelled in field events as well. Four members of the squad finished within the top-10 in the pole vault, led by Kimberly Johnson's (Lisbon, Conn.) mark of 3.66 meters which won the event. Teresa Parker (Colchester, Conn.) took third (3.20m), Alicia Gray (Colchester, Conn.) placed fourth (2.89m) and Brittany Niemczyk (Vernon, Conn.) claimed sixth (2.89m).

Spindel won the discus throw with her new school record mark of 43.78 meters. She also took home second in the hammer throw behind Katherine Reynolds (Hamden, Conn.) with a toss of 48.64 meters. Reynolds won the event with a throw of 50.70 meters and also placed seventh in the shot put with a mark of 11.05m.

St. John's won the meet with 170 points followed by Southern in second with 120 and Long Island in third with 112.

Southern returns to the track on Sunday, April 25 for the Yale Invitational.
