Women's Basketball Tipped By Merrimack, 64-55

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Sophomore Keshia Primo (Mississauga, Ont.) scored 15 points, while senior Shelley Pierson (Watervliet, N.Y.) pulled down 13 rebounds, but the Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team lost to Merrimack on Tuesday night, 64-55.

The Owls are now 6-13, 2-12 in Northeast-10 action. Merrimack moved to 8-9, 6-7 in league play.

Southern Connecticut jumped on the Warriors early, scoring 18 of the first 26 points of the contest to build a 10-point lead. Merrimack countered with a 16-4 run to take a 24-22 lead with 4:15 remaining in the first half. The two teams played evenly the rest of the stanza, with Merrimack taking a 30-28 lead into the locker room at halftime. 

The Warriors scored the first bucket of the second half, but SCSU rolled off six straight points to regain the lead at 34-32. Merrimack responded with a 19-4 spurt to build its largest lead of the game, 51-38, with 10:39 remaining. 

The Owls closed to within three points, 56-53, with 2:34 remaining, but the Warriors closed the game with an 8-2 run in a 64-55 final. 

Logan Lentz (Chambersburg, Pa.) and Milena Lazarevic (Gmunden, Austria) each added seven points for the Owls.

SCSU is back in action on Saturday at UMass-Lowell.
