NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated Dominican College tonight, 70-32 to extend the win streak to five games on the year. The Owls got out to a fast pace in the first half putting up 44 points while shooting 50% from the floor. Southern had a 26 point lead at half. The Owls pulled out to their largest lead of the game of 44 points late in the second half. Southern put together solid defense throughout the game, allowing Dominican to only shoot 30% from the floor. The Owls forced Dominican to turn the ball over 27 times in the game. 31 points for the Owls came off a turnover by Dominican.
Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y.) lead the charge for the Owls picking up a double-double, scoring a team-high 18 points, 14 rebounds and four steals.
Senior guard
Sylvonya Moore (Stockton, Calif.) contributed 14 points and seven rebounds in the game.
Shaniqua Fuller (West Haven, Conn.) provided a spark off the bench, scoring nine points and collecting six rebounds in 13 minutes played.
Lauren Allen (Sterling Heights, Mich.),
Camille Fantini (Andover, Mass.), and
Keshia Primo (Mississauga, Ontario) eached tallied eight points in the game. Fantini also added seven rebounds, four steals and six assists in the game.
Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) chipped in five points, a steal and an assist in the game.
The Owls improve to 7-3 on the season. Dominican falls to 4-5 on the year. Southern Connecticut next game will be Tuesday, January 3rd when they travel to Rindge, N.H. to face Franklin Pierce. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
