NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team fell to conference opponent Adelphi University, 85-68, at home on Wednesday night. Sophomore
Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a team-high 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting with four blocks, while
Greg Langston (New Haven, Conn.) contributed 17 points going 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Also in double figures for the Owls was
Chazz McCarter (New Haven, Conn.), who scored 16 points with five rebounds.
With the loss, the Owls fall to .500 on the season with a 12-12 overall record, 9-11 in league play. Adelphi improves to 15-9, 11-9 in conference action.
The Owls started out on fire hitting their first two shots, a three-pointer by McCarter and a jumper from
Chris Harris (Brooklyn, N.Y.), to go up 5-0 within the first two minutes of the first half. Adelphi responded with a quick seven points to tie it up. Southern continued its good shooting in the first 10 minutes of the first half to jump out to an 18-11 lead with 12:17 remaining. Both teams played back and forth basketball with a total of three lead changes to close out the half with Adelphi out in front, 40-36. McCarter scored 11 of his 16 points in the first half.
Adelphi started the second half on a 12-4 run with 14:54 remaining. There were three times that the Owls brought the lead to within five points, with the final charge at 7:14 remaining, but they could not get any closer. Adelphi's largest lead of the game came on the last possession with a final score of 85-68.
The Owls are back in action at home against Saint Rose this Saturday with a tip-off scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
