NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Another stellar comeback was in the cards for the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team on Tuesday night against Pace. Trailing by 16 points with just under nine minutes to go, the Owls closed the game on a stunning 27-4 run to claim a 63-53 win over the Setters.
The Owls improved to 12-10, 9-7 in conference play, while Pace fell to 10-13, 6-12 in league play.
Sophomore forward
Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the charge, as he scored 13 of his 18 points in the second half. He finished with a double-double of 18 points with 11 rebounds to help the Owls overcome a five point half time deficit.
The Owls had four of their starting five in doubles digits. Senior
Chazz McCarter (New Haven, Conn.) and senior
Dexton Williamson (Bridgeport, Conn.) each contributed 15 points with eight rebounds, while junior
Chris Harris (Brooklyn, N.Y.) finished with 10 points.
The Owls gained momentum in the second half on three key defensive charges taken by Harris capped by a three-point shot by McCarter to take a 52-49 lead. At which point, the Owls never looked back.
Both teams started off slowly on the offensive end, with neither shooting better than 25-percent in the first half. Pace carried a 23-18 lead into halftime.
The Owls went on a 9-2 run to open the half and take its first lead since the opening minutes. Pace countered with a 24-9 spurt that allowed it to open a 13-point cushion at 49-36.
SCSU took over from there, limiting Pace to just one field goal in the final 8:43 to pick up the win.
The Owls are back in action for a road game against American International College scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start on Feb. 12.
