Women’s Basketball Extends Streak to 10 With Win Over Merrimack, 62-50

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team extended its winning streak to 10 games with a win against Merrimack today, 62-50. The Owls got off to a slow start letting Merrimack jump out to a 10-point lead in the first seven minutes of play. Southern Connecticut slowly chipped away and claimed the lead with a little over two minutes left in the first half. The Owls went into the locker room at half with a two-point lead.

Southern Connecticut opened up the second half scoring the first three baskets to jump out to an eight-point lead. The Warriors bounced back and got the lead down to one point with 11 minutes to play. SCSU slowly built the lead back up and was able to put the game out of reach with a 12-point lead with only minutes left in the game.

With the win, Southern Connecticut moves to 12-3 on the season and 9-2 in Northeast-10 Conference action.

Senior Sylvonya Moore (Stockton, Calif.) led the Owls with a team-high 19 points, five steals and three assists. Classmate, Alex Fiola (Fall River, Mass.) added an additional 15 points, three assists and three steals for the Owls in the win. Forward Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y.) picked up the only double-double in the game for SCSU, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 boards.

Camille Fantini (Andover, Mass.) chipped in eight points, to go along with four steals, four boards and three assists. Point guard Lauren Allen (Sterling Heights, Mich.) shot 50% from the field picking up six points in the victory.

The Owls return to action Tuesday, when they travel to Manchester, N.H. to play Saint Anselm. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
