FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team defeated Queens College tonight, 61-51 for their 10th victory on the season. With the win, the Owls extend their winning streak to eight games.
The Owls got off to a slow start in the first half, trading baskets with the Knights throughout the first 10 minutes of the game. Southern Connecticut was able to build a lead to as high as 16 points in the first half and went into half time with a 12-point lead. The Owls went back-and-forth with the Knights in the second half. Queens out scored Southern Connecticut 23-21 in the second half but the 12-point lead from the first half was able to secure the victory for the Owls.
Senior
Sylvonya Moore (Stockton, Calif.) led the way with a team-high 18 points. Moore also added three assists and a rebound on the night. Forward
Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y.) fell two rebounds shy of a double-double, scoring 10 points and collecting eight boards.
Keshia Primo (Mississauga, Ontario) added eight points and three rebounds coming off the bench for the Owls.
Both
Lauren Allen (Sterling Heights, Mich.) and
Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) contributed six points apiece. Allen also added a team-high seven steals for Southern Connecticut.
Camille Fantini (Andover, Mass.) helped control the boards, recording eight rebounds to go along with four points on the night.
Southern Connecticut moves to 10-3 on the season. Queens drops to 1-13 on the year. The Owls return home Wednesday to host Saint Michael's College at 5:30 p.m.
