GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Freshman
Jackie Beathea (Annadale, Va.) scored 20 points and pulled down 15 rebounds, but the Southern Connecticut State University (1-1, 0-1 NE-10) women's basketball team fell to Adelphi (1-1, 1-0 NE-10) on Wednesday night, 72-63, in a Northeast-10 Conference game.
The Owls fell behind early in the game and never could capture the lead in the first half. They tied the game once with just over nine minutes left in the half at 14-14, but then Adelphi would go on a 15-2 run to take a 29-16 lead. Adelphi would hold a 39-27 lead going into the half.
The Panthers would continue the lead in the second half and go up by as much as 17 with 13:30 left the game at 50-33. After a
Moni Smith-Ocran (Bronx, N.Y.) converted on a free throw, Beathea would then score 6 straight points, leading a 7-0 run, and cutting Adelphi's lead to 11.
The Owls would get as close as 66-59 with just over a minute to go in the game, but the Panthers would close the game with six of the last ten points and win, 72-63.
Smith-Ocran would record her second double-double of the year grabbing 15 rebounds to go with her 14 points.
Mariah Hankton (Upper Marlboro, Md.) finished with 12 points and
Camille Fantini (Andover, Mass.) finished with seven points and 10 rebounds.
Katie Stopera also chipped in with 10 points.
The Owls fall to 1-1 on the year and 0-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference. SCSU will be back in action Saturday at 1 p.m. when they welcome Saint Thomas Aquinas to Moore Field House.
