PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team fought off a late comeback and went on to defeat Pace, 84-75, in the Northeast-10 Conference game at Goldstein Health, Fitness and Recreation Center in Pleasantville, N.Y.
Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Owls with 24 points and four rebounds and scored his 1000th point as an Owl early in the second half.
Rashamell Vereen (Meriden, Conn.) scored 15 points for SCSU.
Stefon Williams (Jamaica, N.Y.) scored 13 points with six rebounds and
Deshawn Murphy (Hamden, Conn.) had 13 points.
With the Owls (4-1, 2-1 NE-10) leading 13-6, Pace got within 13-12 after a jumper from Jaylen Mann, causing a Southern timeout.
The Owls then took an 18-12 lead after a layup from
Jose Cruz (Shrewsbury, Mass.).
SCSU then carried a big lead for the remainder of the half including a 37-20 lead, and taking a 47-29 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Owls continued to have the big lead, but as the half went on, Pace kept chipping away.
The Owls led 76-51 when Williams made a layup with 8:56 remaining.
Pace then went on a 19-3 run to get within 79-70 with 3:32 remaining, causing a Southern timeout.
The Owls were able to put it away when Hamlet made it 84-72 after a three-pointer with 2:27 remaining.
Keon Williams led Pace (3-3, 1-3 NE-10) with 14 points and Denzel Primus-Devonish had 11 points.
