Daquan King (Plainville, Conn.) and
Ross McGibney (Dublin, Ireland) netted first half goals to propel the Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Stonehill in Northeast-10 Conference action.
Stephen Sasso (Orange, Conn.) stopped all four Stonehill shots to earn his fourth shutout of the season.
The Owls got on the board first in the 7th minute. King scored his second goal in as many matches by booting a
Jonas Folstad (Trondheim, Norway) touch past Skyhawks goalkeeper Adam Colella.
In the 29th minute,
Ross McGibney (Dublin, Ireland) added to the lead. The senior co-captain knocked a pass from
Kevin Joslyn (Norwalk, Conn.) into the lower right corner of the net from inside the box.
As the half wound down, Stonehill had a good scoring chance. A three on two breakaway resulted in a corner; however it was deflected away by
Tyler Naef (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.).
As the teams went to intermission, the Owls held a 10-5 shot advantage on Stonehill.
The Owls' controlled play in the second half, even earning a penalty kick. The kick, taken by
Mads Larsen (Trondheim, Norway), was blocked by Colella. The ensuing shot off the juicy rebound rang off the crossbar and out of harm's way though.
Southern, which improved to 4-2-1, 4-1-1 NE-10, plays again Tuesday night at AIC.
