Women's Hoops Prepares For Pace And AIC This Week

UPCOMING THIS WEEK

The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team will play Pace on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Moore Field House and will travel to Springfield, Mass. on Feb. 16 for a 1:30 p.m. start vs. AIC.

LAST TIME OUT

Southern Connecticut fell to Saint Rose on Sunday, 66-51, in a Northeast-10 contest held at Moore Field House.

Jackie Beathea tallied 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Owls in the loss.

Katie Stopera scored seven points to go with three rebounds and three assists and Amani Lightbourne chipped in with seven points.

• Nicole Bini scored 15 points for the Golden Knights and Gabie Polce chipped in with 14.

BEATHEA TABS ELEVENTH DOUBLE-DOUBLE

Jackie Beatea recorded her eleventh double-double of the season on Sunday as she scored a game-high 17 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.

ONE-TWO PUNCH DOWN LOW

Junior Moni Smith-Ocran and freshman Jackie Beathea each recorded double-doubles on Feb. 6 at Assumption.

• Beathea recorded 13 points and 10 boards on her way to her tenth double-double of the year.

• Smith-Ocran notched her eighth double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds.

BEATHEA TABS ROOKIE OF THE WEEK HONORS

Jackie Beathea was named the Northeast-10 Rookie Of The Week for the fourth time this season for her play against No. 17 Stonehill and Saint Anselm. Beathea averaged 19.0 points per game and 13.5 rebounds per contest in the two outings.

OWLS AMONG D-II NCAA LEADERS

The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball is ranked nationally in several categories as of Feb. 6, 2013.

• The Owls rank No. 28 in steals per game averaging 12.1 per contest.

• Beathea is No. 18 in Division II in double-doubles with nine on the season.

• Fantini is ranked No. 18 in steals per game with a 3.3 average per game.

• Smith-Ocran and Beathea come in at No. 24 in rebounds per game pulling down 10.2 rebounds per contest.

BEATHEA EARNS NE-10 ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Jackie Beathea was named the Northeast-10 Conference Rookie Of The Week on Jan. 28 after averaging 19.0 points per game and 13.5 rebounds per contest.

DOUBLE-DOUBLES FOR BEATHEA & SMITH-OCRAN

Freshman Jackie Beathea and junior Moni Smith-Ocran each recorded double-doubles on Jan. 26 at Stonehill.

• Beathea had 22 points and 15 rebounds and Smith-Ocran had 18 rebounds and 16 points. Beathea now has nine double-doubles on the year, while Smith-Ocran has seven.

ALL-TIME VS. PACE

Southern leads the all-time series against Pace by a 18-14 margin.

EARLIER THIS SEASON VS. PACE

The Owls were defeated on the road earlier this season against Pace, 62-59, on Nov. 28, 2012.

Mariah Hankton led the Owls in scoring tallying 19 points in the loss.

• Beathea would record a double-double in the game scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

• A 13-0 run for Pace in the second half would set them up for the victory at home.

• Brittany Sheild would record 18 points and eight rebounds to lead the Setters.

ALL-TIME VS. AIC

AIC leads the all-time series against Southern Connecticut by a 19-14 margin.

EARLIER THIS SEASON VS. AIC

The Owls were defeated at home earlier this season by AIC, 70-56, on Dec. 1 in a game held at Moore Field House.

• Beathea scored a game-high 21 points for the Owls.

• A 18-3 run late in the first half would give AIC a comfortable halftime lead, 31-23.

• Southern would respond with a 6-0 spurt to start the second half, but would never take the lead and fall at home.

• Alyssa Roach would score 19 points to lead the way for AIC.

OWLS GET WIN AT HOME VS. SAINT ANSELM

Southern got it's fifth win of the year on Jan. 23 as they defeated Saint Anselm, 59-54.

Katie Stopera scored a career-high 18 points in the win.

• Beathea tallied her eighth double-double of the year with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

LEADING THE WAY

• Beathea leads the Owls in scoring averaging 15.2 points per game.

Moni Smith-Ocran leads the team in rebounds per game averaging 10.4 per contest.

• Fantini leads the team in assists and steals per game as she averages 3.8 assists per game and 3.3 steals per contest.

BEATHEA EARNS WEEKLY HONORS

Freshman Jackie Beathea was named to the Northeast-10 Conference Weekly Honor Roll for her play against Saint Michael's and Merrimack. Beathea averaged 17.5 points per game and 10 rebounds per contest in an 0-2 week for SCSU.

STOPERA SCORES CAREER-HIGH VS. HAWKS

After scoring a career high on Jan. 19 vs. Merrimack with 14, freshman Katie Stopera netted 18 points in a win against Saint Anselm on Jan. 23.

BEATHEA NOW WITH SEVEN DOUBLE-DOUBLES

Beathea tallied her seventh double-double of the year on Saturday in a loss vs. Merrimack. Beathea scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Owls.

SMITH-OCRAN WITH SIX DOUBLE-DOUBLES

Smith-Ocran recorded her sixth double-double of the year on Saturday as she tied a career-high in rebounds with 18 and also scored 11 points.

BEATHEA NAMED TO WEEKLY HONOR ROLL

Beathea was named to Northeast-10 Conference Weekly Honor Roll for her performances during the week of Jan. 7 against Franklin Pierce and UMass-Lowell. Beathea averaged 21.5 points per game and 13.5 rebounds per contest last week.

SMITH-OCRAN TALLIES CAREER-HIGH IN REBOUNDS

Senior Moni Smith-Ocran grabbed a career-high 18 rebonds vs. UMass-Lowell on Saturday. She also contributed her fifth double-double of the year with 10 points and 10 boards against Franklin Pierce.

BEATHEA EARNS ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Freshman Jackie Beathea was named the Northeast-10 Conference Rooke of the Week for her performances against Dominican on Dec. 31 and Saint Rose on Jan. 5. She finished the week averaging 15.5 points per game and 8.5 rebounds per contest.

OWLS SLIP PAST DOMINICAN

The Owls defeated Dominican on Dec. 31, 59-57, in a non-conference contest to improve their record to 4-5 on the season.

OWLS DEFEAT LEMOYNE

Southern Connecticut recorded a win at home on Dec. 4, beating LeMoyne 69-52. Senior Camille Fantini scored a team-high 17 points in the win.

BEATHEA RECORDS FOURTH DOUBLE-DOUBLE

Freshman Jackie Beathea recorded her fourth double-double on Dec. 8 vs. LeMoyne. Beathea grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds and scored 18 points in the win.

BEATHEA TALLIES DOUBLE-DOUBLE VS. PACE

Freshman forward Jackie Beathea recorded her third double-double of the year in a 62-59 loss to Pace on Nov. 28. Sophomore Mariah Hankton also chipped in with a season-high 19 points for Southern.

ANOTHER DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR SMITH-OCRAN

Junior forward Moni Smith-Ocran tallied her fourth double-double in a row for the Owls on Nov. 20. She recorded 14 points and 11 rebounds.

SMITH-OCRAN TALLIES THIRD DOUBLE-DOUBLE

Moni Smith-Ocran tallied her third double-double on the year after recording 15 points and 14 rebounds on Nov. 17 vs. Saint Thomas Aquinas.

BEATHEA RECEIVES ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Freshman forward Jackie Beathea was named the Northeast-10

Conference Rookie Of The Week for her performances last week. Beathea scored 20 points and pulled down 15 rebounds

at Adelphi on 11/14 and had nine points and nine boards versus Saint Thomas Aquinas on Nov. 17.

SMITH-OCRAN NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Junior forward Moni Smith-Ocran was named the Northeast-10 Conference Player Of The Week for her performance against Dowling on Nov. 10. Smith-Ocran had 18 points and 12 rebounds in the Owls opener.

OWLS DEFEAT SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS

SCSU defeated Saint Thomas Aquinas on Nov. 17, 63-54, to pick up its second win of the year.

BEATHEA RECORDS FIRST DOUBLE-DOUBLE

Freshman Jackie Beathea recorded her first career double-double on 11/14 in a loss to Adelphi. Beathea pulled down 15 rebounds to go with her team-high 20 points.

OWLS DEFEAT DOWLING

Southern Connecticut opened its 2012-13 season on Nov. 10 with a win against Dowling, 70-68. Camille Fantini hit a game winning three-pointer with 28 seconds left in the game.

SMITH-OCRAN POSTS DOUBLE-DOUBLE

Junior Moni Smith-Ocran posted her first double-double of the year on Nov. 10 vs. Dowling. She scored a team-high 18 points, while pulling down 12 rebounds in the win.

IN SEASON OPENERS

The Owls are now 29-10 in season-opening games since 1974-

75. SCSU has won its last five season openers.

IN THE NE-10 PRESEASON POLL

The Owls have been selected fourth in the Northeast-10 Conference preseason poll.

IN THE NATIONAL POLL

SCSU has been selected No. 21 in the USA Today Sports/ESPN Top 25 coaches preseason poll. They are also No. 16 in the Division II Bulletin preseason rankings.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB

The Owls welcome seven newcomers to the squad for the 2012-13 season - Katie Stopera, Danielle Powell, Nicole Grossbard, Amani Lightbourne, Jackie Beathea, Liz McKinley and Trinity Barnes.

VETERAN PRESENCE

Southern Connecticut returns four players from last year's squad - Mariah Hankton, Camille Fantini, Jacqueline Deens

and Moni Smith-Ocran.

OWLS ENJOY STELLAR CAMPAIGN

The Southern Connecticut State University women's basketball team closed the 2011-12 campaign with a 25-6 overall record and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Along the way, the Owls also advanced to the finals of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament.

WIN IMPROVEMENT TOPS IN DIVISION II

The Owls improved from 11 wins in 2010-11 to 25 victories in 2011-12, which marked the best win improvement (+14) in all of Division II from the two campaigns.

OWLS FINISH NO. 24 IN NATIONAL POLL

Southern Connecticut concluded the 2011-12 season ranked

No. 24 in the national ranking in the WBCA/ESPN Division II poll. SCSU had been ranked as high as No. 18 during the course of the season.

SCSU IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT

The 2012 appearance marked the sixth appearance all-time

for the Owls in the tournament. SCSU is 13-5 all-time in the

NCAA tournament and has won at least one game in each

of the six appearances.

SMITH-OCRAN SETS REBOUNDS RECORD

Moni Smith-Ocran set a new single season record last year, recording 307 total rebounds. That broke Melissa Palmer's record of 296 that was set during the 1987-88 campaign.

BROWN EARNS ARRAY OF ACCOLADES

Head coach Meghan Brown was named a finalist for the 2012 National Coach of the Year award in addition to her selection as WBCA Regional and Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year.

TWO OWLS EARN ALL-CONFERENCE LAURELS

Two student-athletes were awarded year-end honors from the Northeast-10 Conference. Sylvonya Moore was named Second-Team All-Conference, while Camille Fantini was named to the Third-Team.

TWO EARN ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM HONORS

Moni Smith-Ocran and Sylvonya Moore were selected to the Northeast-10 All-Tournament team for their performances in helping SCSU reach the finals.

RISING TO THE CHALLENGE

Southern took down three nationally ranked opponents last year, including No. 22 Assumption, No. 23 Franklin Pierce and No. 5 Bentley. The win over the Falcons snapped their 17-game home winning streak.

EXCELLENCE IN THE CLASSROOM

The Owls had seven student-athletes named to the Northeast-10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for their work in the classroom during the 2011-12 academic year - Jackie Deens, Alex Fiola, Lauren Allen, Moni SmithOcran, Shaniqua Fuller, Mariah Hankton and Keshia Primo.

AMONG THE NCAA LEADERS

Southern finished the 2011-12 season ranked among the Division II leaders in several categories. The Owls were No. 6 in steals/game (13.9) and No. 11 in turnover margin (+5.9). In addition, Camille Fantini closed the year ranked No. 8. among all Division II players in steals/game with an average of 3.5 per outing.

FANTINI JUST MISSES ON STEALS RECORD

Camille Fantini finished just five steals away from setting a new SCSU single-season mark. She had 107 steals on the year, just four back of Geraldine Artis, who registered 111 steals for the Owls during the 1990-91 campaign.

The Owls g will travel to Le Moyne on Feb. 20 for a Northeast-10 game at 5:30 p.m.
