NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Four players were in double digits as the Southern Connecticut State University men's basketball team wasable to hold off Pace and win its sixth straight game, 78-64, in a Northeast-10 Conference game at Moore Field House in New Haven, Conn.
The Owls (16-6, 13-5 NE-10) were led by
Deshawn Murphy (Hamden, Conn.) with 18 points and eight rebounds.
Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.) had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Trevon Hamlet (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also had 16 points, three rebounds and two blocks while
Luke Houston (Pearl River, N.Y.) chipped in 13 points and five rebounds.
Pace (9-13, 6-12 NE-10) had two players in double-digits. Jonathan Merceus led with 24 points and five rebounds while Keon Williams had 14 points.
In the first half, the Owls jumped out to an early lead and would never trail for the remainder of the game when Murphy made it 12-4 with a three-pointer, assisted to Houston.
The Owls would later go on a 7-0 run to make it 29-20 capped off by a three-point play from Hamlet with 4:38 remaining in the half.
Pace would then go on a 9-0 run to tie it 29-29 capped off by a jumper from Jaylen Mann with 2:33 remaining.
SCSU take a 36-30 lead after Smith's three-pointer, assisted to
Greg Langston (Stratford, Conn.), and would take a 36-33 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Pace did not go away and tested the Owls throughout the game with some key possessions.
SCSU went on 10-4 run overall to take a 48-40 lead with 15:21 remaining capped off by a layup from Smith.
Pace would make it 59-58 with 7:34 remaining after a three-pointer from Kai Smith.
The Owls would then go on a 10-2 run to take a 69-60 lead with 3:35 remaining that would give them the breathing room for the win.
